I am having to memorize this book in order to take a Captains promotional exam and it is inspirational in regards to leadership. Every person desiring to promote should read this book prior to promotion! With that said, there were many typos and grammatical errors and it is obvious that it was a collection of articles thrown together to make a book. Many of the stories repeat themselves producing some redundancy. Also, it is obvious that Chief Sargent has some bitter feelings regarding those he left behind at VBFR. The funny thing about firemen is that there is someone just like him at the department I work for in Texas! Overall, I do recommend it and will continue to read it as I move up the chain of command.

The book is more a compilation of other author’s ideas. Like every other book or class, there is something to take away from reading it but my overall impression of the book was that it was just average. Some of that opinion is influenced by the author’s poor writing skills and the inferior book construction typical of PennWell publishing. If a coworker aspiring to become an officer or just promoted asked about the book, I would begrudgingly recommend it because I believe it is important to see and hear several ideas and theories and then determine what is right and what will work through critical thinking skills.

The content of the audio book was good, The problem I have is the Audio book would not play in my cars CD player (which is where I normally listen to audio books). I requested a replacement and received a new one (I returned the original ) it will not play in my cars CD player either. The CD player plays other CDs with no problem .It will play on my PC Thanks LS

This book covers the basics of leadership as well as giving very good advice on how to integrate the advice into everyday situations. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for leadership skills, not just firefighters. Chase Sargent gives good down home advice which will help you in your future endeavors to promote your self as a true leader. This book is the one I would take if I could only have one book on leadership.

If you are already a company level fire officer, or are about to become one, this is a must-have book for you. The author writes about his experiences in a realistic and readable guide to success as a leader and fire fighter.

No smoke and mirrors here, just the stuff you need to do a good job and still work well with your crews and survive in the firehouse.
