Every successful organization needs high-performance teams to compete and succeed. Yet, technical people are often resistant to traditional “touchy-feely” teambuilding. To improve communication, performance, and morale among NASA’s technical teams, former NASA Astrophysicist Dr. Charlie Pellerin developed the teambuilding process described in “How NASA Builds Teams”—an approach that is proven, quantitative, and requires only a fraction of the time and res… More >>

Chris Fairey – I have had the pleasure of reading “How NASA builds teams” and wish that it had been available many years ago when I was at NASA as an engineer and then a manager. This book blends the real life of working in NASA and a common sense approach to assessing the performance of the government and contractor teams. Space flight, like so many other hazardous fields is a risky and dangerous business. Knowing how your team performs and reacts with one another is a key to mission success. These processes (4-D assessment and workshop) provides an outstanding methodology to assess the team and provide feedback on how to improve the performance of the team. I have also had the pleasure of working with the 4-D team in performing many team assessments and workshops in the last four years. Having the oppotunity to observe the NASA and contractor teams improve using this tool, is an amazing process. I recommend this book for all teams that want to improve their performance.

In my 15 years in IT, I have never experienced an approach to building healthy social team context as this. This book provides an incredible analytical approach to measuring and improving the environment that is created when groups of people work together with a shared purpose. With measurement comes the ability to identify and improve. The 4-D System provides a complete system, from diagnosis to remedy.

Why read this book? Seriously troubled technical teams have voluntarily used the assessments to remedy their troubles. The evidence for this is in the book.
Repeated use of the 15-minute assessments will surely strengthen your teams’ performance and make their work more rewarding. This creates valuable competitive advantage. I say this from having worked with the assessments at NASA for 6 years.

I have used Dr. Pellerin’s teambuilding and leadership development approach as a manager in an areospace company, and I know that it is effective. This book presents the product of the author’s study of what determines a team’s performance. He shows that the context that the team is working is has an enormously powerful impact on the performance of the team members and the effectiveness of the team. He presents simple tools to assess the effectiveness of a team in the 8 behaviors that he has found to set and control a team’s context. The book contains a link to a web site that lets the reader perform the assessment on themselves or their team.
The book’s style is very entertaining, with many personal anecdotes from his experiences as a senior NASA official during the Hubble Space Telescope launch and repair and from his years as a team development consultant. He shows how this approach to teamwork applies equally powerfully to personal lives. It seems unlikely that someone could read this book without getting many clear insights into their personal and professional behavior.
